Here's the engine start and checks procedures. The numbers in brackets refer to the controls as seen in the pics from my first post.
1. Open the side panel and turn on the battery [1]. Check battery voltage [3],[4]. Connect power to the aircraft bus [5].
2. Open APU and engine start panels with right mouse click on the covers. Lift the switch [15]. Open APU door with [6], press and hold till the green light is on. Lift the switch [7]. Press start button [8], observe RPM and EGT rise. After APU is started it's genereator automatically comes online (white light turns on).
3. Lift the switch [17].
4. Open electic subpanel. If there is fuel in the 2nd group of tanks, turn on automatic fuel transfer [36]. If there is fuel in tank no.12, turn on the switch [37].
5. Go back to captain's panel and open fuel subpanel ("T" icon). Open the fuel cutoff valves [40] and turn on the boost pumps [42]. Turn on switches [41] (under green lights, not as marked on the pic).
6. If there is fuel in tanks no.12, call up it's subpanel by right-clicking on the fuel tank selector and turn on all switches there (pics 1 & 2, ref.6 & 7 in the pdf manual addendum that comes with the model). The green light should turn on.
7. If there is fuel in 2nd group of tanks and/or tank no.12, two green lights "transfer from aux tanks" will illuminate on the warning panel.
8. Set engine stop switches [38] to "Normal" (up).
9. Disengage flight fine pitch stops [39].
10. Go back to the side panel. Select engine with [18] and press start button [19]. Observe RPM and EGT rise on minipanel in righthand upper corner.
11. Repeat for all engines.
12. Turn on all switches on electic subpanel and close caps.
13. Stop the APU with [9] and close it's door with [6]. Press and hold until amber light turns on. Close APU panel cover with right click.
14. Check feathering system. Press the partial feather buttons 23 and observe engine RPM drop. Lift left paired feather test switches [24] (outboard). Move throttles to takeoff setting by dragging either of the outboard levers with right mouse button. The green "autofeather armed" lights [44] should illuminate. Move throttles to idle, two outboard feathering buttons [43] should illuminate. "Pull" the feather buttons with right mouse click to reset the lights. Reset the left test switches [24] to down position. Repeat the test procedure for inboard engines.
15. Close engine start panel cover. Taxi with flight fine pitch stops [39] disengaged. Engage when lined-up for takeoff. |

Hello Freddie.
Thank you very much for all the hard work. Very well laid out and just what we needed.
Although I am relatively experienced with Russian aircraft I am finding the Il-18 a bit of a challenge.
For some reason, I can't get the APU to start up.
I have followed your instructions to the letter, but pressing the APU starter button has no effect.
I've tried re-starting FS9 and loading the default Cessna first, but I still can't get the APU to work.
Anyway, I'll keep trying.
Thanks again for an excellent tutorial. |

I can get the APU started.. but cant' get engines to crank. light comes on when I hit the engine start button, but rpms do not rise.
switch 38 is up, switch 39 is down. the two buttons that I assume are switch 41 are turned on (up) and light is on. APU is on, and "open" (green light).
when I try Ctrl-E, engine cranks, but doesn't catch and dies. |

41: I never did anything with those I believe.
All of 40s are on, same for 42s. Also 15 and 17 up, 16 is down
Make sure you have 37. |

That seemed to work so far.
Thanks Freddie. |

The problem is that the fuel is not supplied to the engines. My bad, forgot the switches 40 & 42. The start procedure above is updated. |

There's a glitch in the panel. When going through the strartup procedure after you have connected the battery with [1] & [5] you absolutely must turn on [15] before doing anything else. Otherwise the situation will get irreversible and you will not be able to start the APU ever until you reload the aircraft.
The other thing is the flight fine pitch stop issue. The panel uses an oversized invisible spoiler to simulate the braking force from the props at near zero pitch. The main problem is that the drag produced by the spoiler is TREMENDOUS. For example it slows down the aircraft inflight from 400 km/h to 100 km in less than a second. The other side effect is that the aircraft with FFP disengaged resembles a sail ship. You barely can taxi into 10 kt wind at takeoff power while taxiing downwind becomes tricky due to very fast acceleration. If you are familiar with .air file editing you can adjust spoiler drag to a more reasonable value that suits you.
BTW [ / ] key engages and disengages both FFP stop switches. |

I have also noticed that... Fortunately, the other two things needed to survive (altitude, brain) were still there so I managed to survive
Any hints on spoiler size? I am quite sure drag can not be THAT big. |

... guite a bit of thrust at idle, I relase the brakes and I immediately start rolling. |

I performed a rough Russian to English translation of the original versions documentation a year or more ago. PM me your email address if anyone is interested in that.
It's not perfect but better than nothing.

Would someone try this for me please. When you load into the sim, right click on the panel and choose close window. Is your screen flashing?
I tried setting Window 00 to visible=0 and Window17 to visible=0 and there was no flashing after loading. But, clicking on the left facing arrow to bring up the side panel, then going back to the pilot panel, the flashing was back. This is driving me crazy |

| Another thing I have noticed is if you turn on the power switches for the ADFs and Radios before you turn on the the PO-1000, the PT-500 or the PT-1000 switches, the radios and the ADF will not work and you have to reload the aircraft. After finding bugs like these it makes you realize how perfect the TU-154b-2 is. Everything works! |
